The following part provides step-by-step guides of reading BMW EWS by using AK90 key programmer.
Step 1 Remove steering column cover to access EWS module.
1) Remove the screws on either side of the steering column that hold the cover to the column.
2) Remove the screw underneath the steering column
3) Pull the bottom half of the column down to remove it
4) Pull the top half of the cover up to remove it.
5) You also need to remove the plastic rivet (Fig.1, Fig.2, Fig.3 and Fig.4)
Step2: Unplug following parts.
1) Unplug the gong (startup sound)
Start the launcher, left click to speaker icon at the right corner, select the mixer options, mute one of the World of Warcraft program. Close the volume control and press Play.
2) Unplug the OBD2 ort
Remove the housing and then remove the actual port from plastic housing by pulling the harness backward out of it.
3) Unplug the floor light (Fig.5, Fig. 6 and Fig.7)
Step 3: Disable a EWS and get the nut off.
Loosen the nut which holds the EWS up. Unscrew the order nut all the way. Get the nut off and pull the EWS main unit out. (Fig. 8, Fig. 9 and Fig. 10)
Step 4 Pull the circuit board out.
Push all 4 tabs on the connector side to pull out the circuit board. You can place opened end on your chest at angle and push in all 4tabs and used my chest to get the circuit board out. Or you can try other methods if you can get it out.(Fig.11, and Fig. 12)
Step 5: Connect AK90 key pro to the vehicle.
Slowly scrape off the mcu chip by using your tools. Then connect the AK90 key pro to BMW vehicle via main cables. On the other side, connect the AK 90 key pro to PC/laptop and replace key or transponder in the spare space. (Fig.13)
Step 6: Run AK90 key pro software.
Install and run the AK90 key pro software. Look for your key if hear of a “beep” voice. Then press “Test Key” button to proceed. (Fig.14)
Step 7: Write MCU
Select your MCU type on the menu program. The MCU number will be written on the MCU itself. (Fig.16)
Fig. 17 below displays how to connect with EWS via cables. Press read EWS button after connecting it.
Step 8: Read MCU
The program is reading OD46J (MCU) which cost some time, please wait patiently. (Fig. 18)
Step 9: Analyze EWS
After complete reading MCU, save a copy of the file by press Load button in case of losing important information. Then select analyze EWS option. (Fig. 19)
Step 10 Add/Delete keys.
In this process, you are allowed to add key or delete key, change mileage, modify VIN on EWS. You may also go back to write a new key. (Fig. 20)
Step 11: Select key tpye
Select which slots to write key and what type of key you have. Take an example of BMW 2001 330ci, it has the 10030A EML which should be classified in EWS3. Then click Write to proceed verifying.(Fig. 20)
